Statement by Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland on terrorist attack at the Strasbourg Christmas Market.

“This is a sad morning. As we know, three people have been killed and a dozen injured as a result of last night’s attack in the heart of our City. Our condolences to the families and friends of the victims. Our sympathies go to the citizens of Strasbourg and we offer our solidarity to our host nation France and to this great city. Let me express my full support for the French authorities, who continue to do all they can to protect the people who live here, the international community and the citizens from across Europe that come to visit this historic place. I am confident that the city of Strasbourg will never let terrorists take over the beautiful streets, squares, market places in this city. They belong to the people. At a time when we were beginning to take comfort from the fact that the number of terrorist attacks is declining, yesterday’s killings served as a painful reminder to us that the threat of terrorism in Europe remains acute and that attacks can take place at any time. We must therefore be clear and resolute in our fight against terrorism and the causes of terrorism. The work we are doing in the Council of Europe to prevent radicalisation and the fight against extremism is as important as ever”.
